Your Bits Deserve Better: What Two Open Mic Disasters Taught Me About Underwear

I was 18 when a woman told me I was funny in passing. That was enough to sign me up for an open mic night. That was my origin story.

I should have known that it was going to end in a disaster as I walked up to get on stage. Some people get a gut instinct. I felt the waistband of my imported underwear dig into my waist.

The First Time: A Complete Disaster

My first joke went out. Nothing. Just silence and the sound of my own regret.

Second joke. Still nothing.

And somewhere in that silence, I became very aware of the clothes on my body: Was my T-shirt always this uncomfortable? Why's stitching so rough against my skin? The waistband of my underwear now felt like it was tightening with every passing second.

Also, there was warmth collecting in places where warmth should not collect. And then a question formed in my head that I have never, to this day, been able to answer: was that sweat, or had the occasion got to me in a far more embarrassing way?

I walked off stage. The silence from the crowd had already hurt. But honestly, the underwear was the bigger problem.

Several Years Pass. My Wife Laughs at Two Things.

My wife is not a generous laugher. So when she laughed at two things I sent her on the same day, I took it as a sign. Midlife career reinvention. Stand up, open mic, here I come.

This time I prepared properly. And by properly, I mean I thought carefully about what I was wearing.

I picked up the XYXX Supima Cotton T-shirt. Supima cotton that's 4x softer than regular fabric, doesn't cling, doesn't crease into your anxiety. Underneath, the XYXX Modal Boxer Briefs

I stood in the wings feeling, if not confident, at least not distracted.

The Second Time: Still a Disaster, But a Different Kind

The spotlight felt exactly as bright as I remembered.

Joke one went out. A few awkward chuckles. Technically, that’s progress. Right?

Joke two, and the only person laughing was my wife, laughing the way you do when you love someone and feel sorry for them at the same time.

But here's the thing, I was calm!

Not because I'd suddenly become funny. But because nothing below the waist was making things worse. The Modal Boxer Briefs feature a no-mark waistband, flatlock seams, and are designed for maximum sweat absorption. The modal fabric and 4-way stretch meant they moved when I shifted my weight, leaned into the mic, and turned to acknowledge the silence from a new angle. So while the crowd was harsh with their feedback on my jokes, at least my boxer briefs were soft and compassionate.

I walked off stage. Not a standing ovation. Not even a sitting one. But a couple of people stopped me near the bar and asked me where I shop.

So. Not a comedian. But possibly a man with a future in fashion.

The Point

There's a version of this blog where I tell you that the right modal underwear unlocks your potential and transforms your performance. That's not what happened. What happened is that when everything else is already difficult — the nerves, the silence, the spotlight, your clothes should not be adding to the list of problems.

The XYXX Modal Boxer Briefs do one thing brilliantly: they leave you alone. Tagless comfort, anti-roll waistband, zero irritation from the seams. So if you find yourself in a situation where you’re already panicking, be assured, your boxer briefs won’t make your thighs worse.

FAQs

Are modal boxer briefs good for high-stress situations, such as performing or public speaking?

Yes, and the reason is simple — modal fabric is soft, breathable, and moves with you. When you're nervous, your body temperature rises and you move differently. The Modal Boxer Briefs feature 4-way stretch and fabric designed for maximum sweat absorbtion, so they handle the physical side of stress without you having to think about it.[

What makes modal different from regular fabric for men's underwear?

Modal is significantly softer than regular fabric and more breathable under pressure. The XYXX modal uses CloudSoft modal with flat-lock seams and a tagless construction — no scratching, no bunching, no waistband drama. Regular fabric works fine for low-stakes situations. Modal is for when the stakes go up.

Will the waistband roll or dig in during movement?

No. The Modal Boxer Briefs have an anti-roll waistband specifically designed to stay put. Whether you're on stage, in a meeting, or doing something with a higher success rate than stand-up comedy, it holds its position.[Text Wrapping Break]

How do I know what size to get?

XYXX provides a full-size guide on the product page. When in doubt, size up — the 4-way stretch means the fit is forgiving, but men's underwear that's too tight is never a good starting point, especially if you're already nervous about something.

Is the  Supima T-shirt worth the money?

Genuinely, yes. The Supima cotton T-shirt is 4x softer than regular cotton. It retains its shape and colour season after season and under any kind of lighting — including the unforgiving kind.
