Why Chambray Pyjamas Are the Ultimate Loungewear?

Whether one likes it or not, there is always a prevalent dress code that is deemed socially acceptable. It can seem out of place when seen from another point in time, but when it is happening, everyone wants in.

It explains why we as humans have proudly sashayed around in togas, striped drainpipes, baggy sweaters, parrot-green bell bottoms, ripped jeans, even skinny jeans (ugh!), hats to no hats with varying degrees of periodic relevance. Well, now the time has come to embrace loungewear. Today, all of it is only appropriate for a fancy dress party, but there was a time when people exchanged the most solemn of vows in the most formal of settings, wearing such.

To be honest, the advent of loungewear has been a long time coming, and the last few years have only accelerated its prevalence and acceptance. But there still remains some resistance, and many will nod in ‘Tsk Tsk’ if anyone mentions loungewear or comfort around them - to them it is all night-suits, or PJs.

But think of the word PJs for a minute, doesn’t it relax the mind automatically? It’s like the word ‘Bubbles’, there is just no angry way to say it. Pyjamas evoke a similar serotonin rush of serenity. Trouble is that every time we humans find a way to balance comfort with style, someone red flags it, as if anything too good to be true, by definition, can’t exist.

To be fair, this axiom didn’t hold ground for so long because, all along, pyjamas were not designed; they were simply a raggedy piece of fabric that was loosely fashioned into something resembling trousers, but with only airiness in mind. They were not flattering, and nobody seemed to particularly mind. But how can comfort be stylish? Well, just like the new spate of EVs has shown us, one can be friendly yet fast, PJs or loungewear are showing us that comfort needn’t come at the cost of style. It was an accepted, if not agreeable, decree that pajamas are for comfort and style can never intersect this garment.

The XYXX Chambray Pyjamas sit on that precise cusp – they didn’t just join this party, they decided to up the quotient in many ways. This is how they went about defining the key areas to address.

Fabric: While everyone harps on about fabric blends, XYXX focused on the fabric weave. The unmistakable mottled look of Chambray cotton fabric is what makes it look cool and casual like denim, yet airy and movement-friendly. The warps and wefts done in two shades (one being white while the other is coloured) make for a light yet nicely held-in-place garment with a pre-faded/lived-in look.

Structured: So now we have the fabric, the next step is to fashion it into something fitting and form-defining. This was the first thing that a good PJ needed to be deemed respectable – PJs that are cut like trousers to accentuate the wearer’s silhouette and not PJS, which feel like someone just lazily designed a skirt and then put a stitch up the middle!

Airiness: Can’t be a comfy jammie if it isn’t airy and breathable. The uniform weave of chambray makes for even gaps in the grid, which facilitate air passing through easily. This ensures that the PJs can be fit yet roomy, snug but not skin-sticking, loose but not baggy to the point of 1980s shabby.

Light: 125 GSM is weightless enough to feel like it’s not there (but it is, be assured.) On hot and humid days, when the air seems to hang heavy all around us, almost as if it wets everything it settles on, a light garment with breathability is the no-compromise choice.

Breathability: This feels like reiteration, but using 100% pure cotton Chambray weave ensures nothing synthetic chafes the skin while also maximising the cross-flow of air. In other words, a garment that works to keep you cool, while others around you are losing theirs.

Functional: A concealed drawstring under a no-mark waistband and a single fly-button ensure they remain a functional piece of apparel across situations. I have been wearing mine unforgivingly every day, and even after a month of high-level use, the elastic is holding up. That said, something about loosely hanging drawstrings makes me feel it’s either holiday time or a day off, and some days that is all the motivation one needs.

Having personally acquired 2 pairs, I see why they pose a serious threat to the idea of bothering to RSVP to an invite that requires anything more than a pair of stylish pyjamas to present oneself. Or, go ahead, RSVP, iron the hell out of that shirt to the point of wafer-like crispness, pull out your comfiest loafers, and then pair it all with a pair of sombre XYXX Chambray PJs and be the cynosure of all party conversations.
