How to Dress Well for Any Body Type

There is a version of me in a changing room at 17, drowning in a regular-fit shirt doing absolutely nothing for my scarecrow shoulders, genuinely convinced that nothing looked good on me.

I was wrong. It just took about 15 years, 4 different body types, and 1 deeply humbling attempt at squeezing into a slim-fit polo at 35 to figure out why.

The Body Type Myth

The internet will give you a flowchart. Pear-shaped? Do this. Rectangle? Try that. It's well-meaning and entirely useless for the Indian body, because your body isn't a fixed shape you dress around. It changes. Sometimes seasonally, sometimes weekly, sometimes between Monday morning and Friday evening, depending on how much biryani you ate that day.

Over the years, I've been skinny. I’ve been made fun of for having chicken legs. Then I had a mini glow-up in my late twenties. And now I'm in the Pot belly, building uncle phase of my life.

Unfortunately, there's no single cut waiting to solve for all the bodies I’ve had over the years. What actually helps is understanding a few things that work.

Fit Is Not the Same as Size

A larger size doesn't automatically mean a better fit. A smaller size doesn't mean sharper. Fit is about where and how comfortably the shoulder seam actually lands and how the fabric stretches across the chest and waist.

The XYXX Supima T-shirt is a good example of this. The regular fit doesn't cling and doesn't lose itself at the same time. The ribbed neckline holds its shape wash after wash, which matters more than it sounds when you've had cotton t-shirts for men that turn into horribly loose nightwear by the third laundry cycle.

The XYXX Oversized T-shirt is worth a try if it’s not your style yet. The instinct, if you're carrying weight, is to avoid volume. The reality is that a well-proportioned, oversized t-shirt, mens cut, worn with something fitted at the bottom, often looks more deliberate than trying to compress everything into a slim or regular fit.

You also need to consider wearing stripes on your t-shirts. They help the eye perceive things as being narrower and thinner. It’s something I’ve learned from my wife and use it on the days when I’m feeling particularly down about my body.

The Daily Variable Nobody Talks About

We also need to discuss the daily changes your body undergoes. Some days your body holds a little extra water. Some days you're bloated by noon. Some days, the waistband that was fine in the morning becomes unbearable after lunch. This is the part that no body-type guides and fabrics accounts for, and it's the part that affects how you feel in clothes more than your actual shape does.

This is where fabric matters more than people admit. So look beyond the technical name, don’t get too tied to traditional fabrics vs blended fabrics.

Let me explain

The XYXX Zero Pants are built for this without making a thing of it. Natural stretch, wrinkle-resistance, and a concealed drawcord that gives you a little room to work with. They look the same at 7 pm as they did at 9 am. Formal pants for men rarely prioritise this kind of give, while the Zero Pants remains structured without punishing you for being in a body that had lunch. But somehow, conventional wisdom will tell you that formal pants are better, just because the Zero Pants have an elastic waistband or a bit of polyester.

Colour Is Braver Than You Think

Most men default to navy, black, white, grey and rotate. It's safe. It also eventually gets very dull, and it tells you nothing about what you'd actually enjoy wearing.

The XYXX Cotton Polo in sky blue is a good place to start if the idea of colour still feels like a stretch. Polo t-shirts for men do something useful — the collar makes an outfit look considered and you don’t feel like you’ve put yourself too out there.

Full-sleeve t-shirts for men are often skipped in places like Mumbai, but the XYXX Full Sleeve Polo is an article worth considering. It layers cleanly under a jacket and can offer a little more structure for the arms than a regular tee.

If you’re feeling a little daring, you can always try the striped crew T-shirts, which will add a pop of colour to your cupboard.

The Part Nobody Tells You

The model in the product photo doesn't look like most of us. This is worth saying plainly because it shapes almost every shopping decision men make; imagine you see the XYXX Relaxed Fit T-shirt on someone with zero visible evidence of a digestive system, so you don’t add it to the cart.

But you should, and here’s why.

The washed cotton and the relaxed cut work the same for everyone who wears them. Stylish t-shirts for men don't only have a size requirement. The GSM and cut can completely change how something feels on your body. A 180 GSM relaxed fit can feel similar to a 210 GSM oversized tee because it fits, breathes, and moves with you rather than against you.

The XYXX Vest in olive is another example of something I would have completely overlooked in my current pot belly era. It took one five-minute trial to change my mind.

Try things in different lights. Try them outside the full-length mirrors. Try the colour you'd normally put back on the rail, like yellow or rust. There's an aspirational side to how you shop, and a default you always return to, and you can’t keep criticising your body for the clothing decisions you make.

Shopping based on how you look with your arms at your sides in bad lighting isn't a style decision. It’s an outdated trope and it needs to go away.

FAQ

Q: What's the difference between a relaxed fit and an oversized fit in t-shirts for men?

A relaxed fit is slightly roomier than standard, with no change to shoulder placement or body length. An oversized fit features dropped shoulders, added length, and a more deliberately voluminous cut. The XYXX Oversized T-shirt uses the latter for a structured, intentional look.

Q: What should men look for in formal pants if comfort matters?

Natural stretch, wrinkle-resistance, and an adjustable waist. The XYXX Zero Pants have all three — built-in stretch, quick-dry fabric, and a concealed drawcord — without losing the structured appearance that formal trousers need.

Q: How do oversized t-shirts work for men carrying more weight?

An oversized top with a slimmer or well-fitted bottom creates balance. The XYXX Oversized T-shirt's cut across the shoulder lets the tee flow across the body better.

Q: Does the XYXX Supima T-shirt keep its shape after washing?

Yes. Supima cotton is 2x more durable than regular cotton.
