4 Full-Sleeved Polo’s Time in the Sun

Back in the day, the shirt was introduced as a garment with detachable cuffs and collars to insulate the more elaborate jacket from sweat and smell. This was for the masses; the nobility had perfume. The military extended that format, and the undershirt became a hygienic win for the men in uniform. Post WWII, when people started wearing it out on display rather than hidden away, the day of the tee had arrived. But it was too casual to be an alternative to a regular dress shirt. And that’s when the amalgamated Polo shirt was born.

Mind you, it wasn’t always called a Polo; the name stuck because gentlemen indulging in the game on horseback preferred it to anything else. The fabric was made heavier to give it more strength (sports didn’t come without their share of tumble, even back then), and the inclusion of buttons and plackets did 2 things – more ventilation and a smarter close-hug fit. The full-sleeved polo, well, if the polo is a tee with a college education, the full-sleeved polo is one with a post-graduate degree and a tidy investment portfolio.

Come 2026, the full-sleeved polo is making a resurgence, a comeback of suave, if I may. From air-conditioned indoors to balmy outdoors, a good polo can handle it all without, pun intended, breaking a sweat. Since it looks even closer to a shirt, it even has a proportionately higher “formal” quotient- making it a staple for the wardrobes this season.

So how do you tell a good one? Look out for these:

  • The type and quality of the material used matter a lot. Combed long staple cotton, as found in the XYXX versions, is best suited for the task. It remains soft and unfaded even after endless washes.
  • The pique texture is quite a classic look and makes for better airing for lasting freshness. It is also durable over many wash cycles.
  • Dark colours rule the category, and maroon, brown, and navy blue are the most popular choices.
  • Side vents are those tiny slits that ensure the polo sits in place without gathering, straining, or pulling up. It’s a sports feature and still works in a boardroom setting.
  • XYXX does one better and uses its proprietary IntelliEaze technology that offers unmatched lightness, softness, and breathability.

Now that you know why it’s worth having, let’s see how it can be styled. From travel days to meetings, a day exploring the outback or being a city slicker, the full-sleeved garment can straddle it all.

  • With formal trousers or khakhi twills (aka Chinos) or just a pair of denims.
  • Under a suit if one wishes to dress it down a notch from formals.
  • Paired with a shacket in any form.
  • Layering it under a sweater or pullover with the collar providing a colour-block accent.

If you are still sitting on the fence about this, you shouldn’t. A full-sleeved polo can be a workhorse of an addition to your stable, one with show pony-like flair.
